People obsess about numbers. Whether its pant size, calories, or the zeroes in your bank account, numbers rule our lives. Knowing not only the numbers, but also the surrounding context can help organize your life and make your interactions more efficient.
Web-savvy individuals have long tracked analytics for websites and digital applications, but one often-neglected area is email, where a bulk of your communication happens. A simple Google App offers a wealth of data about your email.
Every month, I have an email delivered to my inbox that reports statistics like average response time for emails sent and received, average thread length, top senders and recipients, and percent of emails answered. The app visualizes the data and presents it in color-coded charts, graphs, and tables.
This data does more than satisfy my nerdy obsession for analytics. It also provides context necessary in order to make decisions and more efficiently manage my workflow. By analyzing email traffic by day, week, or month, I can better anticipate when I should send emails to ensure the best chance of receiving a prompt reply.
